“Snow storms in the early 2000’s, particularly in the 2011 and 2017 seasons brought what Jackson settlers love most: Tons of powder. A seemingly widespread acknowledgment of powder’s contribution to great skiing conditions paved the way for an explosive interest in backcountry skiing, arguably the best way to find fresh powder in challenging terrain. For those who were up to a pre-dawn hike, and who possessed the skills to navigate avalanche terrain, rewards were many. The Beacon-Shovel-Probe became commonplace, even in-bounds at ski resorts, worn as a badge of accomplishment by local residents. At this time, it was not unusual to see avalanche beacons, oft referred to as “friend finders”, slung across the chest of locals sitting at a bar in town rehashing the days adventures.”
